The dog is terrified of thunderstorms and f ireworks, so she keeps pacing and whining, peeing everywhere, and clumping up and down the stairs. (Silver lining, her anxiety has prompted her to learn the stairs on three legs without help).

A cat I’ve had for ten years is having liver issues, so we now have stressful medication sessions on top of him also peeing everywhere.

In cuter news, the feral cat I kidnapped in December with terrible leg injuries is gigantic and snuggly and totally ok with the dog.

Yay for feral kitties! Our cat was a feral kitten we tamed...that was 2 years ago...has it been that long already? :)

I think I recall your post about saving that kitty. It did get big; big and floofy.

Most dogs I’ve known that are scared of loud bangs tend to be scared of them their whole lives.

I hope they stop blowing shit up in the next hour or so because we  could use some sleep! And yes...kitty needs a diet (or probably more exercise).

My dog has some confidence issues, and may or may not sometimes piss herself if she sees a broom -- but inexplicably, she has zero problems with fireworks

Have you talked to your vet about medication for the pooch? My lab/pitbull mix is also terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks. She didn’t like them when she was younger, but her anxiety got progressively worse over time. The 4th of July is her least favorite day of the year.

The vet prescribed Trazodone for her, which we give on an as needed basis when it storms up or around the fourth of July. Trazodone is an anti-depressant in humans, but it apparently works an an anti-anxiety drug in dogs without being a sedative. We actually only give her half of a dose at a time when it looks like it might storm up in the afternoon, and it does the trick. On the 4th, she’ll get half a dose at a time throughout the day. She still doesn’t like fireworks or thunderstorms on it, but it moderates her anxiety to the point that these events aren’t the end of her doggy world. It avoids destructive behaviors from trying to find a safer place to hide in the house and then accidents from both ends over the next day or two from literally worrying herself sick. The prescription doesn’t cost much, and we refill it maybe twice a year. It has changed her life for the better.

Shelby is waiting for me to get off Oppo and go to bed.

Ellie is scared of absolutely nothing, but she gets offended when you point a camera in her general direction.

I do have trazadone and I give it to her on predictably bad days. Unfortunately I live in a neighborhood of assholes and we can have fireworks (which are totally illegal) any time of day, any day of the year. June-July it’s daily, so I’m trying to drug her only when she’s really lost it, but I wish she would be content to hide in her crate or under a blanket or something :(

I love the hide from the  camera face on Ellie! I have a cat that does that too.

My cat always looks super sleek in the summer, but by the end of winter she looks much bigger. Her weight never changes. Just the length of fur- fluffiness, e specially around her neck and tail.

Thanks for this tidbit about trazadone for dogs, mine is extremely anxious during the week of the 4th.

Same on my end. Once it happened during the day while walking in the park. Poor guy practically  dragged me home.

Piggy feels like she’s made of lead (and I cringe every time she jumps off the furniture onto my wood floors). I mean feral cats learn to preserve energy, right? Or something?

Oh yeah, we’ve done that! For f ireworks, roofers, a backfire, and a trailer hitting a pothole. Sigh.

Fortunately , Shelby is content to hide in an closet (or the bathtub in the hall bathroom of the new house seems to be here safe spot). She seems to instinctively go to the part of the house one is supposed to take shelter in during a Tornado (not that we have those here). Trazodone for her is the difference between being unhappy in her safe spot, and trying to dig through a wall to get to a safer spot and being sick the next day or two.

I always find taking a pup out hunting gives them more confidence around fireworks due to being used to gun shots. My rottweiler doesn't bat a eyelid at any loud bangs ect.

I’d also give something like thundershirt  a try. It worked well for a friend’s dog who has major anxiety issues.

My wife gives her big lout of a dog benadryl. Not sure it does much good. Last night there were so many fireworks because FOJ that it sounded like a war zone, but the dog didn’t get as freaked as last year.
